My First Model, Winter Leaves & Golden Light
January 2011. It feels like a whole other lifetime, but I still remember this shoot like it was yesterday. My first time working with a model, and she was such a sweetheart—kind, patient, and just as excited as I was. I was still figuring out my camera, still learning how to make light work for me instead of fighting against it, still wrapping my head around color in a way that actually clicked. But this session? It was one of those moments where I could feel myself growing.
I shot this in one of Louisville’s beautiful parks—one of the many places I miss so much. It was winter, so instead of lush greens, the ground was covered in a soft carpet of leaves, all warm browns and golden tones. The trees stood bare, stretching toward the sky, and the sunlight poured through the branches, casting these dreamy, golden rays that made everything feel warmer than it actually was. And honestly? I miss that kind of winter. The crisp air, the golden light, the way everything felt still but alive. (Not to mention, Louisville’s winter is a whole lot friendlier than the ones I deal with now!)
Looking back at these photos, I can see how much I’ve grown—not just as a photographer but as a person. My work has changed, evolved, sharpened. But the heart of it? That’s still the same. I’ve always been drawn to capturing something real, something honest. I thought it would be fun to share these early moments with you—a little glimpse into where it all began.
Thanks for being here. It means the world. 💛
